Homemade Air Fryer Hash Browns (Not Frozen)

Homemade hash browns are a perfect addition to your weekend breakfast menu. With only three simple ingredients, these crispy air fryer hash browns are an ideal breakfast side.

Extra crispy hash browns have always been my favorite breakfast side dish. The option of hash browns is usually my tie breaker at brunch restaurants. French toast sounds delicious, but so does an omelet… Omelet comes with hash browns?? Decision made!

Thankfully, perfectly golden brown, completely delicious hash browns are simple in the air fryer. Hot air circulates around both sides of the shredded potatoes, giving them all that yummy crisp with only a few minutes of cooking. Air frying is a mostly hands-off cooking process, and uses less oil than deep frying or cooking in a frying pan. With only a couple simple steps, this super easy recipe is bound to become an all-time favorite.

Serve this up with some eggs in a nest and fresh fruit for a showstopping quick breakfast your whole family will love.

Gather up your ingredients. For this simple recipe, you will need:

  • Fresh potatoes: My personal preference is russet potatoes for this recipe, but you could also use yellow potatoes or even sweet potatoes!
  • Extra-virgin olive oil: Feel free to substitute canola oil, avocado oil, or a vegetable oil of your choice.
  • Salt and black pepper

Make it your own!

  • For extra flavor, add 1/4 teaspoon of garlic powder and a 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder to your hash browns with the salt and pepper.
  • Try it with diced bell peppers and diced onions for an easy air fryer breakfast hash.
  • Top with sour cream and diced green onions for a healthier version of your favorite potato chips.

Instructions

Step One: Preheat air fryer to 370 degrees if necessary. Peel potatoes and grate them on the large holes of a box grater.

Step Two: Use a clean dishcloth or paper towel to squeeze any moisture out of the potatoes. Getting them as dry as possible will help them crisp up nicely.

Step Three: Transfer the shredded potatoes to a large bowl and add the olive oil and seasonings. Stir the potatoes to make sure they are all well-coated. Spread the potatoes in the air fryer basket or on the air fryer tray in an even layer.

Step Four: Cook the potatoes in the air fryer for 10-12 minutes, stopping halfway through to flip the hash browns for even browning. The hash browns are done when they are nice and crispy and the edges are turning golden brown.

Please, can I use frozen hash browns?

Well, since you said please… Yes, you can absolutely cook frozen hash browns in the air fryer. I prefer making them from scratch because I think fresh potatoes get more crispy. Frozen hash browns contain a lot of moisture and can end up softer. They take about the same amount of time – fresh hash browns take longer to prep, and frozen hash browns take longer to cook.

For frozen hash browns, add 16 ounces of frozen hash browns to the air fryer. Spray with olive oil spray and sprinkle with seasoning. Cook the frozen potatoes in the air fryer at 370 degrees for about 20 minutes, flipping halfway to ensure even browning. When you flip them, spray with some more olive oil spray. I also like to give them a little stir a few minutes into cooking (once they are no longer frozen) to make sure all the seasoning is well incorporated.
