Italian sausage and peppers is a perfect easy weeknight dinner. A simple comfort food, this colorful main dish consists of a bed of sliced peppers and onions topped with your favorite sausage. Pair this delicious recipe with the perfect side dish for a complete meal that your family will ask you to make over and over again. From hoagie rolls and mashed potatoes, to panzanella salad and roasted veggies, the delicious side dishes below are exactly what you need.

How do you make Italian sausage and peppers?

Two Italian chicken sausages on a bed of onions and peppers on a white plate. More sausages and an air fryer are in the background.

Italian sausage and peppers is a super versatile meal that can be made a lot of different ways, including in the air fryer (my favorite way), in a large skillet on the stove top, as a sheet pan dinner in the oven, in the instant pot or in the slow cooker.

This easy recipe requires only a few basic ingredients including olive oil, Italian seasoning, sliced peppers, sliced yellow onions, and Italian sausage links. As simple as it is, you can still customize this dish to your family’s taste!

  • Peppers: Use your favorite bell peppers, or add in some hot peppers for additional spice. I love to get as many colors into the dish as possible, so I usually use a mix of green bell pepper, red bell pepper and orange bell peppers.
  • Sausage: Use your favorite kind of sausage. Sweet Italian sausage and spicy Italian sausage are both great in this dish. I personally like to use chicken sausage or turkey sausage to keep this healthier, but pork sausages will work just as well!
  • Seasonings: I use an Italian seasoning blend to keep it simple. You could add red pepper flakes, garlic powder, or fresh herbs like fresh basil or parsley.

On super busy nights, get some pre-sliced peppers and onions from the produce section of your grocery store, and you can have this meal on the table in less than 20 minutes.
